About Rare Book Research Appointment

The Rare Books and Historical Archives Branch Office provides service in the Boğaziçi University Library annex building located on the north campus. Researchers who are not Boğaziçi University members must make an appointment request in advance in order to enter the campus with their IDs.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR USING RARE BOOKS

1.    Faculty, BU graduate and undergraduate students (written application by affiliated department is required for undergraduates) and members who have borrowing rights may have access to rare books.

2.    Rare book request form should be completed and the date of use should be specified.

3.    Each researcher can be given a maximum of three materials at any time.

4.    Rare books can be used only at the “RARE BOOKS DESK” in the RARE BOOKS AND HİSTORİCAL ARCHİVES DİVİSİON. This department has a physical capacity to serve 2 researchers at any time.

5.    This department offers service on Monday – Friday between 09:30 – 16:00. Rare books cannot be seen on Saturdays and Sundays. After 15:30, rare books are not available. They should be returned to the librarian after use and by 16:00 at the latest. 

6.    No drinks, including water, can be placed on the rare book desk.

7.    The researcher should return the rare book to the librarian if she/he leaves the reading room during the day. Rare books should never be left unattended.

8.    If deemed necessary by the librarian, the reader should put on gloves. Cotton or latex gloves may be obtained from the librarian.

9.    While using the material, the reader cannot use anything other than a pencil. The pages of the work cannot be turned with the aid of a wet finger, an eraser, or a pencil. The pages should be turned delicately, and the bindings should not be forced.

10.  Materials are issued upon signature; the librarian makes damage control after use and upon return of materials.

11.  Rare books do not circulate under any circumstances.

12.  Rare books may not be photocopied partially or totally.

13.  Scanning with a suitable portable device or taking photograph,without flash light is possible within the rules.

14.  Requests for electronic copy is possible only if the published work is free of copyright according to the relevant law.

15.  Requests for partially or totally copy of rare books are assessed according to the intended use of the copy, physical condition of the requested work, and whether the device for copying is suitable.

16.  Scanning or taking photographs may be taken under the supervision of library staff.

17.  The researcher should comply with the rules set forth here and by the librarian in attendance.

18.  Legal procedure is activated against researchers who violate rules.
